Technology , Innovation, the Future

Over the last number of years I have been heavily involved in tech product development for early stage start up companies primarily focusing on mobile app development.
I recently appeared at a Mobile Monday event at which I discussed the issue of misinterpretation of a client’s app requirements. What became apparent, after listening and chatting to various young aspiring entrepreneurs, was the large number of tech start-ups which failed to get off the ground due to the incompetence of the company or sole app developer developing their app.
There are many independent app developers out there who operate from their homes with low overhead costs that on first impressions may seem like a cost effective option when it comes to the development of an app. When an entrepreneur is looking at the bottom line it may seem like he is getting a great deal, but this is a big risk as you are betting your whole venture on the capability of the selected individual. However when you have paid a large sum of money and the product proves unfit for purpose then the cost of the mistake is not only expensive but also potentially fatal to the success of your product. Don’t get me wrong there are some great freelance app developers out there but equally there are many who are inexperienced or just starting out and it can be difficult to tell the difference. In addition, with a freelance app developer you do not get the same assurances, accountability or combined knowledge that comes with a reputable and experienced company. I have seen many occasions where the entrepreneur has appointed a freelance app developer who had a detrimental and harming effect on the business to the extent where some never recovered. For a new innovative app based product the window of opportunity is very small and time is of the essence. Therefore it is imperative that the product is developed and executed in a short space of time. If you are going to be commissioning the development of your own app then it is your responsibility to gain an understanding of how the app development process works and what is involved.

My advice to any tech startup is to define the budget and conduct your own research on the top local reputable app companies. Arrange to meet with as many as you can to discuss and formulate your requirements. You don’t need to learn to code but it is your responsibility to gain a high level understanding of the software development process i.e. language it is written in, platforms iOS or Android etc. It goes without saying that a reputable app development company maybe slightly more expensive however they are professional, accountable and will have knowledge and experience far superior to that of a freelance app developer and in the long term this may save you a lot of money.
If you think it is expensive to hire a professional, wait until you hire an amateur
